Good Morning Procrastinators, I hope this finds you well and looking forward to another day of finding ways of not doing things....
If you think about it, that's exactly what being a procrastinator is. We find a million excuses as to why we are not doing things, and then find a million other excuses to get out of doing what we're supposed to. The biggest and by far the best I have come across is hiding behind the multiple project syndrome.
Not only do serial procrastinators have a lot of unfinished projects, but they tend to have more than one project on the go at any one time. Surely you say, they are one and the same thing? Actually no they're not, and this is why. A successful person also has a lot of projects on the go at the same time. The difference between the successful and the not-successful is the fact that the successful person is also a completer-finisher more often than not. They take each project to its logical conclusion but in doing so have other major tasks lined up to take their place once they are finished.
The procrastinator on the other hand, may have lots of projects on the go at the same time, but does so in order to prove how busy they are. They can hide behind excuses as to why they haven't finished things - "have you seen what I've got to do today"
"I've got so many things I've got to get done, is it any wonder i don't find the time to work on my own projects..." They like to suffer and suffer loudly.
Failure to manage your projects effectively, and hiding behind multiple projects is a great way to ensure that you don't finish anything - why? Because you have to keep going over the same old ground to see where you got up to.
So today I need you to stop whatever it is you are doing. That's right we are going to procrastinate for a while, actually we are going to be planning - believe me there is a difference. Now I want you to have a good look at your desk/work station/house....or wherever else you spend a good portion of your day.
Now please get out a couple of sheets of paper and a pen, coloured crayons or whatever works best for you. And I want you to make piles of everything that you have to do...
Tax - you have 5 days left to get this to your accountant
Bills - what haven't you paid
Filing - put it away and stop hiding behind mess
Reports - what do you need to do to finish it off
Phone calls - who, what about, when -
Now I need you to prioritise those tasks you have just found - and block time on your sheet of paper to complete them.
Now - get your diary out - what do you have to do today? This week? This month?
For your long term projects - where can you slot in the work that needs to be done?
Now and here is the thing. I also need you to set some time aside for YOU. Yes I said you.
If you don't take time out for you today, this week, this month - you will wind up exhausted and unable to get anything done....so plan your projects, but don't forget - you. After all you are your own Do It Yourself Project too.
Have a great day and I'll speak to you again soon.
