I was at the New Norcia Library Lecture on Thursday last week, fascinating morning session by Sister Veronica Brady. Not only was she eloquent, but she was so very well read, and I came away inspired and in awe of the lady. Yet again, I came to the conclusion that there is not enough time left for me to read everything there is to read and absorb. And that we should focus on what is really important and discard those habits and behaviours that no longer serve us or our needs.
For those of you who don't know New Norcia, it is the only Benedictine Community of Monks in Australia. And I started to wonder if the word "habit" that we use so flippantly to describe those behaviours that we have, comes from the same word as the traditional garb worn by the religious clergy. And the answer is yes. According to the well-worn dictionary that sits on my desk a "habit" is "the customary apparel of a particular occupation, rank etc. especially the costume of a nun or monk".
Which then of course started me thinking about my own habits regarding "dress". We don't have a uniform at the place where I currently work, but we do have a "habit" of wearing what can be described as "professional standard of dress" - jackets, skirts, trousers, stockings and shoes....you know the sort of things I am referring to...it is a "habit" we get into, and if you are anything like me, you wear the same kinds of things - day in day out, and if you get outside of those boundaries - you feel uncomfortable. Well I do at any rate.
And that is the point - we have become so ingrained in our "habits" - our clothing, that we don't dare to be different. We don't dare to try anything new. We buy the same colours, same styles and we wear the same sorts of things day in, day out.....don't believe me, then it is time to go and look in your wardrobe, and at the pictures that line your walls. What do your clothes say about you and your ability to take risks. Or are you like me and hide behind a certain colour?
The next question then is - what are we really hiding from?
I hope you have a suitably daring week and I'll speak to you again soon
