The silly season is upon us

----------------------------------------------------------
Good Morning I hope this finds you well for a Saturday morning.

A comment yesterday from a member of staff at the gym I go to has made me think about my exercise routines and habits. And my health in general.

He was inquiring about what I was going to be doing this weekend, so I replied - oh the usual, washing, cleaning, shopping and some writing. Which of course, then prompted another series of questions after I told him about this website and these newsletters. To which he said "I see it all the time. How many people buy a gym membership for an entire year and then not turn up...at all"

Why do people buy a gym membership and not go? Do they think they can think themselves thin? Hint !! Fat is an energy store - you have to use it to lose it. Gym memberships aren't cheap. Ranging from several hundred dollars per year, to thousands if you include personal training sessions, supplements, clothing, decent footwear etc etc.

But the real cost is priceless if you think about it. What would you pay for good health? Not even the richest people in the world are immune to disease and death, yet they cannot buy too many extensions to their lives. So prevention has to be better than a cure.

So why are we talking about the "silly" season? Well every other email I get is from an organisation or other having an end of year get together involving food and copious amounts of alcohol. Even the gym that i go to is having a Christmas dinner, 3 course meal, drinks and canapes to start.

One of the things we will see in the beginning of January is an influx of people to the gyms around the country. New Years Resolutions to get fit, lose weight, not over-indulge "ever again". How soon people forget though, and soon the excuses start to roll in. I can't I've got to work late, so and so has invited me over to dinner, I don't feel like going to the gym I'll just go for a walk instead.

So if we are talking about prevention rather than a cure, and going to the gym three times a week at a minimum, why do we need to wait until January to make a start on the new life and healthy way - we say we want for ourselves. Bear in mind that it is going to take several months to see the benefits. (Your body will feel them long before you can see the results).

The other reason why it is important not to wait until January is that it is still several weeks off, and we are just procrastinating if we don't do something we say we want to do - now. Don't try and do too much, or make too many changes all at once becuase you will be overwhelmed by the process. Decide that you will do something today, and then do it. Let others get stressed about the silly season - not you.
