Creating work - life balance

Welcome to today's issue of The Daily Dose of Motivational Medicine. The e-zine of Motivateme: Breaking the Procrastination Habit. http://www.motivateme.info. Have you signed up for your daily dose yet?
----------------------------------------------------------
Work / Life Balance sounds like a misnomer and to most people it is. They spend long hours at work thinking they are being productive. They get home exhausted, grumpy and have little or no time for the home or the family. They take work home, they work on weekends, they work long into the night - getting home in the early hours of the morning, and for what? A heart attack or other stress related illnesses? Poor relationships with the family? A house rather than somewhere you can call "home". If your house still looks like you haven't unpacked yet, then I would say you have your priortities a little wrong.

Charles De Gaulle said it best when he said "the graveyards are full of indispensable men"

You see most people are under the mistaken impression that longer hours at work means you are being productive. Now, and here is the thing, are you using every minute of the day as effectively as you can? Of course not, it's impossible - interruptions and setbacks - they are part of every day (no matter where you happen to be). Long time readers of the daily dose of motivational medicine knows that I am a firm advocate of using a time log to see just how productive you actually are during a specific day. If you haven't found it yet, a copy of the file is available for download from http://www.motivateme.info - just go to the downloads and free stuff page. It's the only thing there at the moment - but other stuff will be coming in the not too distant future.

So today being Sunday, I need you to have a look back at your weekly time log - assuming you kept one....and this is important because you need to see what you were doing, how long it took you, how further forward you are towards your goals and dreams, or were you just doing "stuff".

Reflection is important. It is important to have some down time, some time for reflection, some time for play. But it is also important not to confuse the different times. So reflection isn't about beating yourself up because you didn;t do as well as you perhaps could have. Reflection is a time for seeing where you can do a bit better next time. No matter how well we plan, there will always be interruptions and setbacks, but if you have your plan written down, if you know what you want to achieve and where you want to go, you can deal with the interruption and get back to where you were. If you don;t know where you are going - how on earth do you know when you get there.

So when you have next weeks plan worked out - I need you to stop. Because today is Sunday - not necessarily a day of rest, but a day of not working. So when you are creating your plan for better work life balance. Remember that when you are at work - work, when you are at home - be at home. Don't confuse the two and you will be far ahead of the rest of the population.
