Do you borrow time from tomorrow?
Whilst this may sound like a misnomer - tomorrow never comes....If you've ever sat up half the night studying for an exam you will know what I mean. But have you considered that borrowing time from tomorrow is actually setting yourself up for a life time of procrastination and re-inforcing the belief that it's OK to put things off until the last minute.
Have you considered that the reason you need to stay up half the night to finish a job is because of:
1. Poor planning - you may not know how long a certain job is going to take, so you underestimate the level of time needed or complexity of the job facing you.
2. Poor time management - are you letting the trivial decisions you make on a daily basis impact on the important?
Or
Do you feel you work better under pressure?
Says who?
Do you enjoy the adrenaline rush and the feverish working at the 11th hour to get the job done....and all the other cliches you can think of to tell people just how busy you are!!
HINT - everyone and I do mean EVERYONE can see through this. If you didn't spend your time on the pointless (see point 2 on poor time management) - the trivial, the endless phone calls that bring you no monetary reward for your time, the endless emails and face-to-face meetings where all they want to do is chat, then you'd be able to get what you needed done - done....and be home at a reasonable hour.
Unless you really don't want to be home at a reasonable hour of course. Put it like this - if you are spending all hours the goddess sends at work to get away from your spouse, you really do need to work out what is important to you. Because in the end - no-one wins if you keep borrowing time from tomorrow.
Oh and by the way - one thing I have noticed with borrowing time from tomorrow is that sooner or later "time" will want the borrowed amount back - with interest.
Stop setting yourself up for failure through poor decision making, poor planning and putting things off until the last minute. You will end up exhausted and unable to do anything until you have paid back the interest on the time that you thought you had borrowed and gotten away with.
