Sometimes when we are faced with a major task we may feel overwhelmed, unsure of what to do first, let alone how to complete the darn thing.
What happens as we have discovered is that we can either give up before we start, or make a few tentative inroads before giving in to temptation to run and hide behind the sofa. Fear of failure has stopped many a project before it has had chance to develop into a workable plan. However, just as many people fear success as they do failing. They worry about whether or not they will be expected to repeat the "success", and if they can cope with all the added pressure being a "success" can bring. However, there is a third aspect, and that is this - these people fear what will happen to them personally, emotionally and physically - they are afraid of change and how the changes will affect them. Will they cope?
In most cases the answer is yes. The good thing about project management is that once the plan is set, it is like a road map - and each section of road is revealed to you as you travel. Whilst you can worry about the road works and traffic snarl ups further down the road (if you want) but chances are good you will have worked out a way around them, by the time you actually reach that point.
But the good thing about having a good road map (project plan) is that you can recruit fellow travellers to assist you if you don't know how to negotiate a particularly rough section. Just as you would hire a guide if you ventured into unknown territory - so you can find people who have been there and done that to assist you.
Where can you find these people?
Well depending on your particular project the following are some suggestions:
Your own social network of people - given that you know quite a few people, who also know quite a few people....sooner or later you will find someone who has the skills and abilities you need.
Your own professional network of people, including online boards. Don't know the answer, ask the question. Most people don't bite - too hard.
Your organisation library or information centre. If you are fortunate to know a librarian or two - they may not know the answer straight away, but they probably know where to look.
And talking of libraries - books, journals and databases of information - all available for you to use.
And if all else fails, hire the expertise. Whilst I can lay concrete I would prefer someone who does it for a living, to do the work....it's likely to be quicker.
And that goes for almost anything you want to do.
- If you lack motivation to go to the gym - then find an exercise buddy. Someone who will keep you accountable.
- If you are struggling with your diet, then recruit the family. Chances are good, if your diet is poor, so is theirs. And whilst they are helping you lose weight etc, you can recruit them to go for a walk with you too - if they think they are keeping you on the straight and narrow, they won't realise they're getting fit and healthy too....I know - being a parent can be really sneaky sometimes.
So please don't give up before you start. If you have a plan, you will know who you need to recruit. Now that doesn't mean you can "delegate" all the jobs, nor should you feign ignorance just to get out of doing something. But if you are struggling, you will find people are willing to help - all you need to do is ask.
