We now have 10 days to go until Christmas Eve, amazing how slow time goes when all you want to do is sit back and eat far too much turkey and bread pudding isn't it?
Well you can sit back and wait for that day to come around if you like, but I've got work to do. And so do you. Don't leave the work that you know you should be doing to the last minute. No-one likes rushing to do jobs just before the Christmas (or any other) break so:
1: Make those phone calls. No-one likes to be kept waiting when they are dreaming about their Christmas dinner. Don't think you can keep your customers waiting until after morning tea and your daily mince pie, or worse still after the Christmas break. Respect their time and the fact they are in the business of making money - even if you don't respect yours.
2. Respond to the emails that are sitting in your inbox. If you are waiting on a response from someone before you can answer the question completely, then tell them so. Don't keep them in the dark. No-one likes to think they've been ignored.
3. Deal with the stuff sitting in your in-tray. Just because there are still 10 days left before Christmas doesn't mean you can leave all your cleaning until the last minute. Deal with it today. And if you think I don't practice what I preach....the office where I work during the day, is being re-modelled during the Christmas break....which means we are going to have to dismantle the offices and un-plug the computers for safe storage....which will happen on the last working day before Christmas, so we can't put things off. Do you have any looming deadlines? No? Well then make some, pretend!! You will get far more done if you do.
4. Do your kids have any projects they are supposed to do before the start of next term? Tonight instead of watching the television - talk to your kids about what they are going to do with their holidays. How are they going to break the project down? What are they going to do with the 8 hours or so they have each day whilst you are out at work? Teach your kids about time and project management...but then lead by example. Don't deal in double standards, kids know you know.
5. And what are you planning on doing with your time off? What projects have you got lined up? Or are you just going to "relax" with several glasses of wine and a good book? Well that will keep you occupied for an hour or two, then what are you going to do? We don't have many times when we can really get stuck into our personal projects. Get out your goal list and work out what you can do and should do during the break. Hint: the more you do, the more you find time to do.
We have less than 240 hours between now and Christmas day. So do all that you can now, so you can enjoy the break without feeling guilty about having not done what you should have.
