Good morning
Yesterday I asked you to consider how far you have come since joining me on this particular push towards getting more out of every day, and your lives in general. Is it working yet? What have you managed to achieve since we started talking? By now you should have a brand new list of things you say you want to achieve, and you should have started to cross off some of the steps that you have taken in order to reach there.
And if you are crossing things off your list, then you should be feeling good about how far you've come....but don't panic if you haven't managed to cross much off the lists, we'll spend some time today working out what is holding you back.
You see, every day is a brand new opportunity to re-evaluate what it is you say you wanted, and more importantly why. And then it is important to align those things with the core values that you hold.
Core values? What are they?
Well the way I look at core values is this...what makes you, you?
Do you value good health, yet you continue to eat badly, smoke too much, smoke the "wrong" things, or drink to excess too many nights a week? And we won't talk about exercise. You see if you value health, yet you constantly do things that goes against that core value, then you will feel bad about who you are and that is enough to stop you in your tracks. You won't take the time or the effort to go to the gym, or eat salad for lunch. You will walk to the shops at lunch time and find the fattiest, sugaryest laden foods you can eat and you will tell yourself that you'll start tomorrow - when you're in the right frame of mind.
What is missing in this? - your actions are going against your core value of good health.
What about the core value of love, family and friendship - yet you spend all day and part of every night at work. Unless you love your job more than those you profess to care about, then you will be in conflict with yourself. You will feel guilty.
Why? Why do we do this to ourselves?
If you value love and time with your family or your partner, yet you don't spend time with them because of work, you need to ask is the job you are doing day in and day out the job you should be doing? Or are there other positions that you could take in order to give you more time doing what you really want to do?
One of the biggest tests to determine whether or not you are being true to your core values is to imagine travelling five years into your future. What are you doing, where are you? Who are you with?
Then you need to look at where you are now and compare the two. Only those people who wouldn't change a thing...they are happy with where they are living, with the person they are living with, they are happy with the amount of money they are earning, the weight and size that they are etc etc. then I would say you are living in tune with your core values....
If however, there are a few discrepancies between your now and your "ideal" world, well then you have a blueprint for what you need to do in order to reach that point. But remember, we are not just aiming for some unseen point in time, we also need to remember the importance of living today, for today...because today is the only chance you have of living today. You can't live today, tomorrow, or next week when you have the time. Today, now. Start living your core values today and you won't need to make New Year's Resolutions....because you are already doing it.
I hope todays DDOMM has given you some food for thought and more importantly a chance to rethink what kind of person you really are, and whether or not you are living up to your core values or not.
