Make the call

Hello fellow procrastinators, I hope this finds you well and enjoying the day. I am just killing time before I head off for an appointment - I don't see the point in getting stuck into a project, well I only have 15 minutes before I have to leave, and you know what happens when you get stuck into a project - you don't want to have to stop and start again at some other point down the track.

But that's beside the point - today's point that is. Today I want to mention telephone calls. I don't know anyone who enjoys talking on the telephone - especially if you know the conversation is going to go badly, or if you are in sales the person may turn you down before you even get to the good bit about how much money the person can save.

But what about those other phone calls you need to make and you've been putting off. Have you applied for a job recently - did you call them to ask if they had received your application? Did you call and ask for feedback if you were unsuccessful? One of the things I have noticed is that if we delay a telephone call (no matter what it is) we end up making other decisions about our future without all the pertinent facts. Take the job example - for example. If you repeatedly send application after application in for jobs but fail to get to the interview stage, and you don't ask the people why - surely it stands to reason that you are going to keep on making the same mistakes over and over again. But what happens if you call the first person and they had a hundred applicants for a job, what happens when 99 of them don't bother to call to see if they got your application...well they may assume you didn't care enough about the job to find out. Or you may find out that the number of spelling and grammatical errors in your application actually said that you didn't have a good eye for detail - in fact it was obvious you had simply re-used an old application. Feedback is vital to ensure that we are doing all that we can with the time that we have been given.

Telephone feedback is also instantaneous - if you have a terrible attitude it's going to show in the words that you say and the way that you say it, and you will have trouble selling anything let alone yourself.

So when you next speak to someone on the telephone, make sure your attitude is positive, then the words that come out of your mouth will also be positive and you will be amazed at how much further you will go.
