Weekend plans or planning the weekend?

Weekends, the end of the working week - and a chance to do all those things that you want to do rather than doing all those things you have to do.

So what are you doing today? Did you have a plan for all those things you wanted to get done this weekend, or are you just drifting along hoping that at some point you will get around to doing what you need to do in order to move your dreams, goals and ambitions forward?

You remember on Monday I told you about Steve Irwin - the Crocodile Hunter who died doing what he loved. Well yesterday another famous person died. His name was Peter Brock and he was a racing car driver, who at the age of 61 hadn't given up the steering wheel. Well he crashed his car on a bad bend in the forests of Western Australia at Gidgeganup. So why am I telling you this - well Peter, like Steve died doing what  he loved doing. He was as passionate about safe driving and passing on his skills as he was about his need for speed. Time will tell what actually caused the car to crash of course - but here's the thing. If you were to die right now (goddess forbid) would you be doing something that you really enjoyed, that you were truly passionate about, or would your end fizzle out like a damp squib?

Would you be remembered as the person who did great things, every day of your life, or will your family and friends find your house filled with half-finished projects and wasted opportunities?

As we said yesterday - every time we sit and watch the television we are watching someone else live their dream. Are you living yours, or are you existing in some boring nightmare?

Well I would like to offer you some encouragement. A few years ago I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up. Yes I have a degree and a job that I enjoy. but was it what I really wanted to do every day for the rest of my life? The answer was no it wasn't. But I didn't know what I really wanted to do, so I drifted.

And then I had a letter from a school friend, her kids are similar ages to mine, and we are only a few weeks different in ages ourselves. Her letter was a wakeup call for me. Sue lived through a couple of years of treatment and surgery but she died of Ovarian cancer just a few weeks short of her 40th birthday.

It usually takes some kind of wake up call for us to realise our own true potential, for me a bout of depression and weight gain followed - and then it dawned on me. I had the power within me to change everything. I didn't have to stay in the job I was doing if I didn't want to. I didn't have to eat the rubbish I chose to feed my body with. I didn't have to be fat and unhappy. I could be whatever and whoever I wanted to be.

AND SO DO YOU.

So instead of vegging out in front of the tv this weekend - well not all weekend at any rate. Sit down and work out what it is you want to do when you grow up. Chances are you were doing it when you were a kid. What did you enjoy? What couldn't your parents drag you away from? And why aren't you doing that now? Today is the start of the rest of your life. You can't do anything about yesterday, and tomorrow can only be planned for, we can't live it yet. We can only live the best that we can today.
