If at first you don't succeed - I'd suggest you stop for a minute, and take a good look at what you were doing.
Most people assume that if they do something long enough or hard enough they will eventually get to where they need to go. And you may do....eventually. It's like wandering down the same street neither looking left nor right, and hoping the right address will suddenly appear in front of you....
Then there are those people who know what they should be doing, but don't do it (dieters will understand this one only too well). They should be walking straight down the centre of the path, but they see all the side roads and decide to go exploring....
You see - your technique may only need tweaking a little in order to get you off and running. Or you may need to completely re-design your "experiment" before starting the process again.
A couple of suggestions - Emulate the scientists - they design an experiment and if it doesn't work, they will make a note of what they did and how they did it, and then they will modify their experiment, and try something else....imagine making a cake, and finding out you didn't add enough sugar to the original recipe.. Do you decide that you are a failure at cake making, or do you simply add butter and cheese to the cake and insist that it was a savoury cake instead? You'd also make a note in the recipe book that it needed double the amount of sugar - so you knew the next time you made that particular recipe.
Life can be a complete experiment....just like the cake making thingummy we spoke about earlier, most people are working from a recipe (a plan if you like). Not many people I know would decide to make a cake, and pick half a dozen ingredients from the cupboard, throw it together and hope a cake comes out the other end....you wouldn't would you? You may be lucky and find that you have developed the next best thing, but unless you knew what you had done, how on earth are you going to re-create that "experiment"? The answer is - more trial and error.
So write it down. That's the plan.
Try it...
Modify it - if you have to
Try it again.
And as your life changes, so should your plan.
But what happens if you have absolutely no idea where to get your own recipe for life from?
Well that one's easy(ish) too.
You should know by now what it is you say you want to do, be or achieve. Well guess what - someone, somewhere will have done that same thing. So if that is the case, then all you need to do is find their recipe and follow it - modifiying it for your own circumstances as you go along. No two people or situations are exactly alike, so you will need to make modifications - you may decide that after reviewing their recipe and trying it for a while, you can actually make a tweak here and there....and hey - you have a brand new recipe that can make you....
Well that's up to you too.
