 --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good Morning I hope this finds you well and ready to tackle the start of the new year. One thing I have noticed is that we change our behaviours and patterns when we have extended periods of time off work.
You go to bed when you're tired, you get up later, you eat at times more in tune with your own personal body clock rather than watching the clock...oh it's 12.30 I must go and eat. How long did it take you to get into a different time zone? I have to be honest that after a week off, I still wake at the ridiculous hour of 6.30, but rather than getting up I do have the luxury of turning over and not worrying about over sleeping.
So how long does it take for new behaviours and patterns to become the norm. Depending on who you listen to, the time ranges from a few days to a few months. Personally I think it depends on a couple of factors - namely the person, and how motivated you are to change.
Now of course you have to find a way to balance those new things you would like to do (new years revolutions) with a change back to your normal pattern of work/eat/sleep - and this is where the cracks start to show. It is so easy to slip back into old ways. For instance, you may not have had a cup of coffee and a muffin all the time you were off, I mean who gets up, gets dressed, gets in the car and goes out to deliberately find a cup of coffee in a morning? not many I would hazard a guess. But I bet you didn't think twice about pulling nto your favourite coffee shop on the way to work this morning, now did you.
So what about that desire to lose weight - did you remember to pack your lunch? Or will you be out at lunch time, trying not to eat everything that isn't nailed down?
So today, before you slide back into old behaviours, ask yourself if you really want to do the same things as last year, or not. Then make the changes that you know you can make stick in the long term. Like everything, new disciplines, behaviours and practices do take time, so don't despair if you don't get it right all of the time.
