Do you need someone to motivate you?
Strange question really given the name and content of this particular site. But a reader mentioned that sometimes she needs someone to motivate her - to get her going....
Which is like saying - I need someone to entertain me. Today I don't want to think for myself, today I want you to do it for me...so motivate me.
Now I am not saying that we don't need alternative ways of thinking about things. That is something entirely different (in my opinion). Like I asked a kick boxing instructor the best way of burning fat, for example. I knew that what i was doing, was not working, and I was willing not only to ask the question, but to listen to the answer and then to go away and put the answer into practice.
What this reader wanted was an excuse not to do something. I can't be bothered today, so can you ....
You may get external triggers that can keep you going for a little while, like personal trainers can push you to do more than perhaps you would do yourself whilst at the gym. But unless you are motivated to continue that process when you walk out the door, then it isn't going to do you much good is it? What do I mean by that? Well say you put - get fit on your goal list. First step you get a gym membership, and a couple of personal training sessions thrown in...you turn up for the first session dreading what's going to happen, and sure enough you walk out feeling exhausted and totally wrecked. What do you do then? Go for coffee and a muffin (because you deserve it)? You see motivation has to come from within. If you want to get fit, then we are talking about more than exercising a few muscles a couple of times a week, but the insides of your body and more importantly your mind as well. So high fat muffins should not be on your rewards list.
Everyone is perfectly capable of motivating themselves to do what they need to do, except we fear not knowing all the answers - so we don't start. We are afraid of falling on our faces, so we don't do all that we can all of the time. We are afraid that if we do succeed we will be expected to continue that level of success all of the time....and what happens if we can't? If we rely on external triggers to motivate us, then we have all the excuses we need.
.Oh, well the Daily Dose didn't offer me anything new today, so I don't need to do....
.The personal trainer just went over the same old ground, I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere, so I will look for someone different.
.I'm reading the book, and when I finish - then I'll get started.
Do me a favour - get your goal list out and cross out all those things that don't inspire you. If your goals don't inspire you - you won't be bothered to work on them. And if they do inspire you - then what on earth are you waiting for?
