I'm sure you've all heard the phrase - practice makes perfect.
Athletes, sports people and professional people all make practice a study. They watch what they do, they watch what they say and they make changes according to what works and what doesn't.
But how many of us make practice a study? I'd have to say most of what we do is trial and error.  We may have a vague feeling that we're not quite on the right path, but we're not sure what path we should be on. So we make some changes, sometimes those changes are radical, we change jobs in the hope that we can find that elusive push to get us going again. Or we forget that we wanted to do better things for ourselves and our families, swallow and keep on doing what we've always done. I'm sure you know what I mean, and I'm sure you've all done the same, I know I have.
OK, this is not a beat yourself up session. We feel that we've tried our hardest, and hey it's not your fault that....
Well when I said it wasn't a beat yourself up session. I will say that in order to get a different result, then you do need to accept that the choices that you have made so far have gotten you to this point. If you can admit that you made a few mistakes all well and good, because it's only by admitting that perhaps the choices that you've made so far may not have been the best ones, but perhaps they were the best ones you could make at the time, then you can truly move on.
So how do you make better choices next time?
Well like all things, practice really does make perfect. Learn from people who have been there before you. Read their books, read their stories, see if there is any correlation between their situation and yours and see if you can't make a few changes. Their stories contain the blue print for designing a new life. They have a different mindset, they know that sometimes they will win and sometimes they will lose, but they see "losing" as an opportunity to tweak their game plan.
Visualise what you want your life to look like, but not in a vague, ooh - when I win the lottery I'm going to.... I want you to see your new life in your minds eye, what are you doing, where are you, with whom are you doing it, what do you look like. When you can see this new life in glorious technicolour detail - much like the mini cooper S we were talking about the other day, then you will be able to work out the steps that you need to take to get you there.
Sounds simple doesn't it. I have to say it's not rocket science, but most people live their lives in the negative, they know what they don't want....well work out what you do and you will stand a better chance of achieving it. I'm not saying this will be a fast process. Neither your goals nor your visualisations should be something you do once and never have to do again.
So today - take the time to start designing your new life, after all that's where you are going to be living.
