You will always find time to do what you need to do, and more importantly want to do.
Interesting isn’t it.
We all find time to watch the movie, or go to the ball game, but we can’t find the time to read the books that will educate ourselves, or take the classes that will give us the skills that we need to take our businesses to the next level. That to some people is “study” and who wants to study, we did that when we were at school didn’t we?
Since leaving school and later university, I have read and studied hundreds of books, papers, articles, and research reports. I’ve taken classes and learned new skills, Why? Because I want to brag about it? Or because I want to show off my information gathering skills? Actually it’s neither of those reasons.
The formal classes may give you the basic grounding and the information that you need. But unless you put that information to use, it will only remain as information, it will never become “knowledge”. And I do have a thirst for knowledge. What can I do today to make me a better person, what can I do tomorrow to make me a better person than I was today. What new skills do I need to have? What is happening in the world that will impact on the way that my life turns out? What new business opportunities are out there that I can capitalize on?
Yet so many people rarely go into a book store, let alone read a good book, they don’t take the time to read the journals, or take additional classes. Then there are some people who flit from book to book, technique to technique, diet to diet, trying to find the magic formula that will transform them from the lives they are currently living into ones filled with riches and abundance. They want large homes and cars, and more money than they can spend in an average lifetime. Whilst reading is a good start, there is a major step missing.
What is the difference between the people who read, and read and read, and the ones who rarely read at all? Actually there is little difference between the two:
· One fails to read,
· The other fails to act upon what they have read.
Both will end up in the same place, doing the same things they have always done. The major missing step is ACTION. You still need to act upon what information you have been given, otherwise the information you have gathered will never become knowledge, and the reason it will never become knowledge is because the information has never been used.
Of course I also read for pleasure, remember what I said about finding time to do what you want to do? Well reading for me is something that I want to do, and I will make time to do it.
The other main reason I read and study so much is because the time someone has taken to gather up and place in one place words that inspire me, they can take me to places I’ve never been to before, words make me laugh, they make me cry, I can meet people who I would never get to meet otherwise, I can hear their wise council and I can try and add their wise council to the way that my life and the life of my family turns out.
Now don’t get me wrong, some books bore me rigid, I still can’t read books on economics, or a profit and loss statement without getting hopelessly confused, which probably explains why I am still struggling with money and need outside advice. But I know that if I didn’t read as much as I did, then my life would be far less richer than it is now.
So please set aside some time over the next couple of days and look at what you are doing in the light of this new insight. Are you reading, attending classes but failing to ACT on the information you have been given?
Remember MOTIVATION is two words contracted into one....What are your MOTIVES for doing something and what ACTIONS are you taking to get you to the life you say you want. Whilst reading is important, so is doing.
