I know I seem to have spent a lot of time over the last couple of weeks talking about setting goals that inspire you. Ones that you can see in your minds eye, ones that are so real they come alive for you.
Which is all very well I can hear you complain, but what happens when those things that you say that you want, bear no reality to where you are in your life at the moment, and more to the point, it's going to take you years to actually achieve it.
Well I never said it was going to be easy now did I? And if setting goals and achieving them was like making toast in a morning and all you had to do was decide whether to have butter or vegemite on it, well it would hardly be worth getting up for now would it?
All together now - NO
Well there are a couple of things to remember.
1. Those things that you do on a daily basis can either take you towards your goal or away from them. That's up to you as you know.
Say you are saving for a holiday. But rather than putting money to one side when you receive your pay check you decide to wait until the end of the pay period just in case something comes up, and sure enough you get to the end of the pay period and you're hanging out waiting for the next paycheck to come through. You have a nasty nagging feeling that you were going to put money to one side so you can go on holiday next year. And you vow that you will do better next time. If you just stop buying those cups of coffee and take away meals, you'd have lots of money saved by now.
2. Some goals cannot be completed in one giant leap. However, each step can take you a little closer to achieving what you say you want.
Say you have always wanted to open your own training and consultancy business. One of the first things you need to do is gain a reputation in your field - preferably a good one - which can take years. You start of with a company and learn all you can, you may take additional courses to gain more experience and knowledge and you go out and about and conduct reviews and training courses for clients. You should get some feedback at this point - do you need to brush up on some things, or did you nail it on the first try? Hint, few if any people nail absolutely everything on the first go. So don't panic if you received a - "could try harder" on your report card.
However, after a couple of years of working with a number of clients, you decide that you know enough about the business so you can start to create one of your own. Now you can poach your current employers client list, but it's a sure way of getting a bad reputation in the market place. So you need a business plan. Who are you going to target and how are you going to grab their attention first, followed by lots of money - second. If you can't do the first, you won't be doing the second.
Where are you going to work from, have you got a business name and number, do you have a web presence and a personal but business related email address - hint - elvisthechicken@.... will not do much for your reputation (and yes it is a real address - and no it's not mine). What about phone numbers, fax numbers, do you have your training courses written? What about course material? Where are you going to hold the training? Will you offer lunch or just morning tea (hint - you will need to factor this into the cost).
As you can see, each step is a minor point along the way to creating the life that you really do want to live. And each step is a minor milestone that you can cross off the list of things that need to be done.
But to go back to the clear vision I've been asking you to cultivate for a while, if you don't know what training to offer, because you don't know what you are good at, you are hardly going to succeed now are you?
