What gear are you in?
No I don’t mean, what clothes are you wearing at the moment. Rather what “gear” are you in?
As you learn something new, you will be in first gear, struggling to climb the hills and negotiate the corners.
Do you remember learning how to drive? When we first learn something new, that is exactly what it’s like, you wonder how on earth you are going to remember how to do all that – AT THE SAME TIME. But sooner or later, you get what the instructor is trying to tell you and you manage to change gears, steer and breathe at the same time. Before you know it, you start to coast. You don’t have to remind yourself to change gears (actual ones this time as opposed to metaphorical ones), nor do you have to remember to check your mirrors before signaling and changing lanes. It becomes automatic.
Now the question has to be, what are you doing now? What gear are you in? Do you consider that you have learned everything there is to now with regards to your current position? Are you still learning new things, or are you coasting through the day, barely acknowledging the other drivers who happen to get in your way? You know where all the humps and bumps in the road actually are, and you can negotiate the curves like a pro. Work has become something you simply do. Mundane, never changing....boring.
Translate that scenario into the rest of your life, what gear are you in with regards to your relationships? Are you still working hard at it, or have you begun to coast?
What gear are you in with regards to exercise, health and fitness, personal development? Unless you are learning, asking "why" you will lose ground to those people around you. All of a sudden you look up to find they're miles ahead of you, and you wonder what on earth happened! You stopped looking, that's what happened. You gave up, your eyes glazed over and decided near enough was good enough. And whilst you were doing that, everyone else overtook you. They're busy changing gears to see what new and exciting things are around the next corner - whilst you are slowly grinding to a halt like a seized engine.
Imagine walking into your life with amnesia - what would you see? What would you want to change? How would you want to live your new life?
Of course you don't have to get a bang on the head to see this and make some changes, but if that's what it takes.....
