Aromatic torture
Have you noticed that when you start to reduce your reliance on certain food stuffs (ie., go on a diet) things start to happen. Well they do to me at any rate. I see overly large people waddling down the street. I know they’ve always been around – some of them work in the same office building as I do, but you can guarantee if I am even considering being – well naughty, I see more of them. As in more people, not plump people wearing little or no clothing.
But today it is absolute torture. You can tune out noise with the use of ear plugs or music. You can stop looking at things by either turning away or closing your eyes. You needn’t touch anything if you stick your hands in your pockets. But have you EVER tried to stop your nose from picking up the aromas and scents from around you? It's impossible - unless you are full of cold.
It’s interesting – one of the major supermarket chains in the UK deliberately build their stores so that the exhaust fans from the bread ovens filter into the rest of the store. Why? Because they know that the smell of freshly baked bread will ensure that it is sold. People cannot resist the smell, I know I can’t.
So why is today torture?
Well my office is obviously situated directly above the kitchen downstairs. Why? Because I can usually smell last nights left overs cooking, or freshly ground coffee percolating. But today they have gone too far – today they have decided to cook/warm – or whatever it is they do with their food – pastry, filled with garlic, cheese and herbs. I can’t remember the last time I had pastry, I simply don’t buy it. It’s one of those no-no foods that come straight off the diet list because if it tastes as good as it smells you can almost guarantee that it will be full of calories. And despite what people say, something’s you really can’t have in moderation.
Excuse me I need to go for a walk.
