Do you want to change? Really?

As you may have realised by now, unless something hurts badly enough you are unlikely to make any long lasting changes to your life.

How do you know if it is hurting badly enough? Well only you can determine that, after all what motivates one person to do something will not motivate another. But take for example, the fact that you are going to lose your house or business because you lost a business deal, would that prompt you to go out there and find an alternative? I would hope so. Or imagine that you have been told by your doctor to lose weight or stop smoking or you will die, would you be more willing to take the steps you need to take to ensure that you live to see your kids and grandkids grow up?

Whilst you may think that losing the business deal wasn’t such a bad thing, after all there are other business deals to be done. The impact that your procrastination can be devastating for other people, of course not just in monetary terms, but in relationships with your family and business colleagues.

Your decision to carry on smoking is yours and yours alone to make, after all you tried to quit once and you really couldn’t handle the withdrawal symptoms, not to mention the gaining weight. But your decision actually impacts on other people. And whilst the smoke does affect your asthma, the chance of you getting lung cancer – well so what, you’ve got to die sometime. But think about the people who have to watch you. To them your death is not an abstract condition. They’ve seen you hooked up to the ventilator in the hospital on more than one occasion. They may also have to sit with you as the chemotherapy drugs drip into your veins is very much a reality. Your short term decisions, your procrastination can have a lifetime effect, and not just on you, but on everyone around you.

So going back to whether or not you want to change, really! Comes down to a few things. What do you want, and why do you want it? Unless you are willing to give up the short term gratification for a life time of health, long holidays or a house that is paid off in full (or whatever your long term plans and goals are) then you will NOT take the steps you need to take.

Change will either come from outside forces:

o     Quit smoking or die

o      Lose weight or you’ll get diabetes

  • Do your homework on time or you will get detention. If you keep on failing to do your homework, we will think that you are not serious about your education and you might as well stay home...want we should write to your parents?

Or internal forces:
I am sick and tired of not:

o       Having enough money to do what I want

o      Being able to wear really sexy clothes

Until you work those things out, then nothing will change for you.
