Talking to yourself

Is not the first sign of madness - but a way to see if those items you have sitting on your goal list are actually goals or merely things you may want at some point or other.

If you are anything like me you will have read your goal list a million times, trying to "see" the item in glorious technicolour detail. How many of you are that good at visualisation? How many of you half -read read this, skipping through those yawning bits, picking up the odd word here and there, focusing on those words that make you SIT up and take NOTICE. See I knew I could get your attention somehow.

What happens when we read things inside our heads is this - our non-conscious brain has decided what it wants to focus on and then feeds into our conscious parts of our brains those things it thinks we want to see. But if you read those same words outloud you have to read all the words, otherwise it doesn't make sense. What is also interesting when you read words outloud is that you immediately begin to see that the words you have used to describe those things that you say that you really want - are actually quite vague. Wishy washy words that may tell you what it is - but not WHAT it is. Is it a new car or is it a Ford Falcon with wire rims, jet black metallic paint with flames running down the side. I don't know - this is your car we're talking about...

If all your goal list is - is a list of "stuff" then you are hardly going to be inspired enough to talk about them to your best friends, to wake up in a morning and "see" that brand new, shiny powerful vehicle with you behind the wheel? Can you imagine racing off to speak to your financial advisor or the bank manager with your plan to actually owning it? No, thought not.

If you are serious about your goals, and you should be - after all they're on your list, then you are going to need to have a conversation or two with yourself....outloud if you please. Go on - no-one is listening. Explain why it's important to you, what do you want to accomplish and why, what will it mean to you to get there - because a goal item is not just about the end result - it's also the journey. Talking outloud about your goals, can determine whether you are willing to strap on the hiking boots and set off on the journey, or whether you are going to stay in your lounge room watching the friday night game.
