be better in the next five minutes...

than you were in the last five. It is an interesting phenomena that we can always do something for 5 minutes that we would hate to do for days and weeks, and often years.

But it is also interesting to note, that if you haven't changed jobs in the last couple of years, you are more likely to waste those five minutes on a more regular basis, than those people who still feel that they have a point to make.

Do you remember what it was like in the first few weeks of landing your new job? You were so excited, you dressed to impress because you wanted people to notice you. You arrived early, you stayed back late, you were happy and you were happy to help.

Then what happened? Well, things got a little boring didn't they? You started to notice that your colleagues didn't dress as well as you - so rather than continuing to wear your good suit, you opted for the corporate standard. You did what you had to do each day, sure you got through your work, but you also spent a bit more time in the kitchen talking to your friends, gossiping about who did what with whom.

Now, things are starting to slide, you no longer care if the bus you catch to work is on time, in fact sometimes you long for it to break down so you have a ready made excuse not to be at the meeting. You can't remember the last time you ironed your work shirts, and lunch breaks got extended by a few minutes. Work was something that you had to do, and worse still you are now putting things off because.....

So what really happened in that time?

Well, complacency plays a part. You know your job and you do it well....well you did at any rate. You feel that you no longer have to make a good impression because you're not the newbie. The work bores you rigid, but you really can't be bothered to get another one because it would mean hard work, and we don't like hard work if we can get away without doing it.

Does this sound like you?

Does this mean that you should think about getting another job if you want to jolt yourself out of bored mode?

Well no, you don't have to do that, but it's not such a daft idea. But you can treat today like today is day 6 of your new job. Why day 6? Well the first week is usually taken up with information gathering and receiving...where is this, do this, this is where you find it....day 6 is usually the second Monday on the new job. and you're still trying to make a good impression. And when you are trying to make a good impression you always try and be better in the next five minutes than you were in the last....

And you can adapt this technique to all areas of your life and relationships. Imagine meeting your spouse again for the first time..... you will be amazed at the differences you can make to your current situation.
