Claim back time, unconnect yourself

Pagers, faxes, cell phones (mobiles), land lines, e-mails, the Internet….we are on call 24 hours a day seven days a week. Is it any wonder we are constantly stressed out, wondering where on earth the day has gone as we tried to respond to everyone else’s calls on our time….

You heard it correctly – the technology that keeps us pegged to our desks are designed to make us feel responsible for other people’s wants, needs and requirements. Yes we send out our own version of wants, needs and requirements also, but a question – how many of those messages were that important?

If you want to claim back some time, it is vital that you answer some simple questions:

How many of you keep your electronic mail open?
How many times a day do you check it?
How many accounts do you have?
Have you any idea how much time you waste on that one simple activity?
Does the world fall over if you don’t answer your emails over a weekend? By the way, if you really need to know something, someone, somewhere will find a way of reaching you. And they’ll probably call one of the many telephone numbers that follow you around all day every day.
Do you switch your mobile phone off?
Do you switch your mobile phone off when it’s charging?
How many hours a day do you spend on pointless Internet surfing, pretending to do research?

I realised how sad I had become when on my way into work this morning, a tanker was crossing the intersection in front of me, and sitting there waiting for the truck to get up some speed I had chance to read its payload….carbon disulphide….so basic chemistry kicked….one carbon atom, 2 sulphide CS2…I wonder what it’s used for??? I’ll look it up on the Internet when I get to the office….which rather brought me to a mental standstill. WHY do I need to know what Carbon disulphide is? I don’t, it has no bearing on my immediate life. It didn’t roll over so I didn’t inhale copious quantities of airborne particles….it just drove past me. Why do I want to waste my precious time on something that will not enhance my life?

Which reminded me of something I heard a while back….

If you place a thing in the centre of your life that lacks the power to nourish,

It will eventually poison everything that you are and destroy you.

A simple a thing as an idea or your perspective on yourself or your world,

No-one can be the source of yourself, it lies within, in the centre

“Faithless”

So what lies at the centre of your life?
