Have you worked out what you want yet?

Well May has arrived. That means we are already over one third of our way through 2007. So as we start to struggle with the thought that there are only 7 and a bit months to go before the end of the year....yes I did say 7 and a bit months, you can't count the lead up to christmas - you'll be way too busy doing other things to worry about goal achievement. So my question for you today as rush headlong into the next phase of your personal journey's....

Have you worked out what you want yet? And more importantly do you have any idea on how you are going to reach those goals and targets??????

For those of you who have heard me talk about this before, I do apologise....actually I don't. You see, if you are still struggling, if you haven't yet worked out the specifics of your goals, if you're sure of what you DON'T want, but not what you DO, then you and i need to have a serious talk. And for those of you who are new to the Daily Dose, thank you and welcome to the family.

So what's on your goal lists? Money was on mine, and had been for quite some time. I never seemed to have quite enough to do what I needed or wanted to do. Well, like all things, you can sort out the problem if you are specific enough...now when I am ever asked "what would you do if you were given a million dollars"....my answer would always be...I'll go and talk to Jason. Jason is my financial planner, and he has been able to decipher the sanskrit that is financial planning for me and turned it into something that I can now understand, and utilise.

So if money is an emotive issue for you, and is number one on your goal list....then you need to look at the thoughts that you have and the words that you have written on your pages.

“I want more money” – well 5c is more, $5 is more. How much do you really want? And just as importantly – why do you want it?
“Well I just want to be rich” – compared to who? Rich in what way? Rich doesn’t always mean having a squillion dollars in the bank.
“OK, well then I want to be well off” – again compared to who? What do you mean by well off? What does “well off” mean to you? If you’re talking about money, then give me a number here.
“I want to be well off so that I don’t have to work anymore” – so you want to quit your job, stay home and stop being a productive member of society? Why? What’s so bad with working anyway?
“I want to win the lottery” – don’t we all!! Why do you want to win the lottery? Did you know you are statistically more likely to be killed on the way to get your ticket, than you are actually likely to win it. Put it like this, if you are basing your entire future financial planning on an external factor over which you have absolutely no control, then chances are better than good, you will remain poor.

And what of those other vague statements that you have on your goal list....

I want to travel?
That's good. But where do you want to go? When? How long for? How are you going to pay for it? How are you going to get there? Are you planning on backpacking or would you prefer first class? Can you afford first class? Are you planning on travelling with anyone? Have you asked them?

“I want a bigger house” – Compared to what? Compared to whose house? Whereabouts is it? How many bedrooms? How many stories? What are the colours of the walls and tiles? Why do you want to move?

“I want to be happy” – Than who? Than what? Why? What difference will having an inane grin on your face have on your life?

Two things, stop using vague statements that mean little to you, be more specific, but don't limit your ceiling....and you do that by adding a disclaimer to the end of any "want"...something along the lines of - this or something better please, and a thank you would be nice too.

So time to get those goal lists out again, it's also time to spend some time working out just what you really want the next 7 and a bit months to bring. Because once you are truly clear about what you want, you will find ways to get there.
