Take time out
Overcome the procrastination habit by taking time out occassionally. Of course if you barely get started in a morning, then you could overcome the procrastination habit by doing something, but lets say for the sake of argument that you have had a good and productive week, surely you should be entitled to some down time.
The answer to that one is "of course".
But when I talk about time out I am not talking about beer and pizza with the boys - well not all the time. Friday is a good day to go back over the week that you've had. What meetings did you have that went well? How many business deals did you make? Do you remember why they went well? Was it because you slept well and woke refreshed and raring to go? Or was it because you were just happy with where you were and what you were doing that particular day?
Every one of course will have a different definition of what constitutes a "good day" so whatever it was for you, try and break it down (as far as you can) because next week you will be trying to re-create that feeling and that emotion.
I have to confess that today I am feeling tired, worse still I "look tired"....shame really because I have a wedding to go to tomorrow (and no it's not mine). I have achieved a huge amount both at work and at home this last week, but I still feel there have been gaps in my personal time line that lacked direction and purpose.....
So what happens now? Is this a beat yourself up session for not having written another 20 pages of the book or what?
Actually no, which is why it is important to take time out. Have a breather and work out what worked and what didn't, and as we have said - why??? The universal question, have you noticed that kids love that question. They want to know why and they won't be satisfied with a half baked answer either. Why did you do that? Why didn't you do it a different way? Why? why? why? why? Have you noticed that when you are asked a "why" question - you can't wriggle out of the answer? Well you can try, but both you and the questioner know when you are not being entirely honest.
So as you take time out over the weekend (assuming you don't work on a weekend that is) or whenever your next day off is, is start asking yourself the hard "why" kind of questions. And then make yourself answer those questions....properly.
If you can't do this in your head, then get a sheet of paper out and write the questions down. It's a fascinating exercise. Not only does it make you focus on what worked and what didn't, it also helps to clarify your thinking and your doing the next time you are faced with the decisions, did I do all that I could today? If not - then why not?
With love and light
