Expectations
Yesterday we spoke about having a healthy respect for yourself. I also mentioned that others would look to you and emulate you - for good or for bad. What I didn't consider at the time is that thing we call "expectations".
What happens when we expect to be treated with respect by our children, our colleagues, our friends, our partners, but the person(s) fail to do so, after all we treat people with respect so surely it should come to be that we should expect similar - shouldn't we?
The interesting thing about human behaviour is the sometimes disconnect between our expectations about someone else, and that other person's own expectations of themselves.
What do I mean by that comment exactly?
Well take customer service for instance. We may feel that it is polite to answer emails and letters promptly when we receive them. We pay our bills on time and expect our suppliers and customers to do the same. So what happens when they don't? They don't answer our inquiries within OUR expected timeline, they don't return calls as fast as you would like them to. Do you get angry or down because of the lack of respect for your time? Or do you accept that sometimes your expectation may have been just a little bit higher than theirs.
The only thing you have complete control over is you. Your behaviours, your thoughts, your actions, the words that you speak. You cannot make people change to match your expectations of them. All you can do is ensure that your actions match your own expectations, and then hope that the example you are setting is so inspiring that others will follow your lead.
Expect the best and sometimes you might just get it
