Responsibilities

Who are you responsible for?

Most people think they can abdicate responsibility for their actions onto someone or something else....

I didn't do as well as so and so because they're richer than me, have better opportunities than me, are better looking than me, have better luck than me....ad lib til fade... to coin an old music lyric term

Well one of the things that I have discovered over the years is that I am totally responsible for "me".

I know that if I don't eat properly or don't do my exercise I will suffer down the track as a consequence. But that does not stop me from sometimes eating things I know are bad for me, or not working as hard at the gym as I know I should be.

I also know that I am totally responsible for every facet of bringing up my children to be the best they can be...that's an awesome responsibility for a parent to have. But I think I am doing an OK job on that score. Sure I know there are areas where I know that I could do better, but on the whole, I have provided my kids with an environment that encourages self expression, freedom to study and the freedom to be whatever they want to be or try. And during these few weeks away from their "normal" routines, habits, habitats and friends they have slotted into their new way of living without too many grumbles or gripes. Sure I know novelty plays a part, but even so, I am proud of my kids and the way they have behaved throughout this time away.

So next time you think that the world owes you a living, or that someone has had it better than you, ask yourself just what could you do differently today to make a difference tomorrow. Because it is those kinds of questions those people who do things and get on in life are willing to ask... how about you???
