Selling yourself short
Actually what you are selling is not a thing, you may think it's a thing, whatever it is - widgets, software, cars, houses, insurance, books, consulting services. You may even argue you sell nothing because you are still at school, or are a homemaker.
What you are selling is far more profound than that. In my opinion you are selling two things:
1. You are selling benefits. If you think about it, you don't buy a heater because you want one, you buy a heater because you want warmth. You don't buy a drill, you buy the ability to make a hole. You go to the dentist to buy pain free teeth.
Now you may argue that you still don't sell anything, and those of you who are still in the education sector and / or at home bringing up a family may think they have a valid argument. But I would "argue" that you are incorrect in your assumption.
You see the second thing you are selling - every minute of every day is YOU.
And it relates directly to point number 1. What are the benefits you can offer to someone else? What is the reason why people speak to you, spend time with you, live with you? Because you are beneficial to them in some way shape or form.
Ok, you might say that you are richer than croesus and the only reason you have "friends" is for the money you can offer, and the things you can buy. But lets assume that's not the case, and your "friends" are the real thing.
So what do you "sell" to your friends, family and associates?
1. Your company - people enjoy spending time with you
2. Your ability to listening
3. Your ability to make a home and raise a family
4. Your ability to converse
5. Your ability to provide for your family
6. Your "other" abilities !!
Now imagine that you couldn't "sell" those abilities, how long do you think you would remain in business? As in, how long would your marriage last, how long would it be before the kids left home, how well do you think you would do in school if you annoy the teachers?
Now translate those skills into any business venture that you have running and you will notice that they are almost identical. People will buy whatever you are selling if you:
1. Are genuinely interested in other people, their needs, wants and desires
2. Listen
3. Make your workplace attractive and welcoming, and that includes you - what you wear - both as clothes, but as facial expressions and body language as well.
4. Speak well
5. Make your business thrive - why would anyone want to buy from a business that cannot offer the extended warranty / customer service - because it looks like the business is on its last legs.
6. Go the extra distance - customer service is not just about a one-off sale, but establishing a relationship
Work on you, and you will see an improvement in every area of your life. I can guarantee it.
