Asleep at the wheel

What do I mean by asleep at the wheel?

Well, people who are asleep behind the wheel are headed for one thing - a full stop, a crash, a brick wall or a tree. Actually that's more than one thing, but they all mean the same thing. If you are not taking responsibility for the car in which you are sitting, then you are at the mercy of whatever comes up - and you can't do anything about it.

Now there are some people who enjoy this - they like being the victim of whatever gets thrown at them, and keeps getting thrown at them - you see victims like to think it's not their fault. Well of course it wasn't MY fault - I was asleep.

Of course it was YOUR fault - you couldn't be bothered to stay awake long enough to participate in this thing called LIFE. Your habits are your life, your life is a habit.

You see people who are asleep at the wheel don't like to make decisions, but they may not like the decisions other people or circumstances make for them either, so what happens with people like this - is they whine and whinge about how unfair life is, and how unfair their treatment has been.

When people (not you of course because you are already taking responsibility for your life) begin to respect themselves, and take responsibility for their lives, they can of course make choices about which direction they want to go in. They begin to drive their lives because it matters to them to do so. They're not content to keep hitting the same brick wall over and over again, but will start to make the decisions and choices that will make a huge difference to the way their lives turn out.

So what can you do with people like this?

Actually not very much - all you can do is point out that not making a decision IS making a decision, and if they don't like what you've chosen to do - then you can also point out you are not their entertainment manager, housekeeper or director of their lives, just your own. And if they don't like it, well then they are going to have to make some choices themselves - and walk away and let them get on with it. And the reason is simple, they will drag you down and force you into inaction because they don't like to think you're going to succeed - after all they can't so why should you.
