Time slips away from the unwary

Week 7 of 2008 is already here, which means of course that we are now half way through the second month of 2008.

If that's a scary thought, consider that we are also a mere 45 weeks away to the end of the year.

Why should I be telling you something that you could quite easily find out for yourselves if you cared to look at your calendar. Well, because I can.

No, the real reason is simple. If you allow yourself to drift through each day / week without consciously adding timelines to projects / to do items, you are more likely to extend the end date ad infinitum. You will always find something else that needs doing, other things you may deem to be more important, until you run out of time and you find yourself rushing to complete whatever it is you said you wanted to achieve.

Take any goal, be it, saving for a holiday, gaining new clients, losing weight, running a marathon, walking the kokoda track. There is no way you can say to yourself on day 1 - today I am going to lose 12 pounds  / increase my profit margin by 3000% / walk the entire length of the kokoda track / train for a marathon and run it tomorrow - and I want to do it all today. It's impossible. That's why they're called goals - they're going to take some time and some effort to reach the end. That's why they are worthwhile.

It's not necessarily the goal in and of itself that's important. But the daily disciplines that you will need to adopt in order to do so. It takes time, persistence and sheer guts and determination to achieve certain things. It does, you know it does, which is why some people give up before they start, they hide behind busy work.

Don't let that be you in 2008.

If you have found yourself drifting through the first few weeks of the year don't panic. You can make a difference starting today.

And you can make a difference with the next decision that you need to make. Do you work on your goal item or goof off and watch the television? Go for a walk or play video games? Cook a healthy dinner or buy take-away.
