Exercise in disguise

If you can't bear the thought of "going to the gym" but you need to lose size / spare tyre round the middle, there are other options. Note: I do use the gym a lot, simply because it's good for your bones (not to mention the muscles, skin and everything else). Bones get brittle as they age, but many studies have shown that lifting weights can prevent / slow down/ reverse this process especially in women. And no you can't end up looking like Arnold Schwarzenneger, we don't have that kind of physiology or testerone levels for that matter.

But if your bone health is still not a good reason to lift weights, then consider some other forms of exercise that aren't really exercise at all (in the normal sense of the word):
1. Ditch the car and walk to the shops to fetch your lunch. (Yes Mark I am talking to you!!)
2. Buy a pedometer (or borrow from someone who doesn't use theirs) and aim for 10,000 steps per day. This figure is touted by many health professionals as the ideal number of steps you need to lose weight. Wearing one for a day or two will show you how many steps you really don't walk every day - it's very enlightening.
3. Take the train or bus to work every day. Save petrol and get some exercise at the same time.
4. Take the kids to the park and push the littlies on the swings....this is a great upper body workout, but don't cheat - walk there.
5. Take the dog for a walk...twice a day. Don't have a dog - borrow one, or take the cat, hamster or goldfish instead. What am I saying - oh yes, get outside and move.
6. Take the stairs wherever possible. Great for the rear end.
7. Gardening. Spend several hours in the garden pottering about, pulling weeds, mowing lawns, every week can bring about massive changes to your overall health...and your garden will look much bettertoo.
8. Cleaning. Take one room each week and clean it - properly. I noticed last night that my very purple wall is dusty, so I shall get the dusters out, move the furniture around and clean over the weekend. A couple of weekends ago i rearranged the lounge. Took hours, wore me out - but the place looks much better.
9. Learn to dance. And if you take someone with you, they'll be fitter too.
10. Just move....If you want to lose it, you're going to have to move it.

Apart from a healthier, fitter you, you get the added benefits. Your skin looks healthier and you're more alert too. This is especially good if you're prone to the mid afternoon slump.
