Today's daily dose: Bossy
---------------------------
Who was the best "boss" you ever had?
What qualities did this person have that you admired?
What were these people able to do - to bring out the best in you as a person?
Now do the same thing for the worst "boss" you had.
What did they do, or didn't do?
What did you do when you were working for these people?
Now, these are not idle questions. This is a get your paper and pencil out and write down the answers. Remember the word - ACTION - well this is one of those times I need you to do something for me...well for yourself actually.
You see, as you grow and develop as a person, a manager, a leader and an all round "good guy / gurl" you will take on the same kind of qualities you see and interact with....usually. I say usually because sometimes you can see it and still do nothing about making changes to yourself.
But one thing I know for certain is this - if you associate with people who spend all their time in the pursuit of pleasure rather than working and bettering themselves, chances are going to be better than good that you too will stay in the same place you currently find yourself. You may make all the right noises - one day I'm gonna ....
Well "one day" just isn't going to cut it I'm afraid.
Now going back to those people you admired as a leader. What did they do?
Well the best leaders I know are the ones who found balance. But they were focused. When they were at work, they worked, but they also went home and found time to be with their families and loved ones. They were also the ones who found time to exercise and eat well. Their lives were balanced, and more importantly so were their minds. They could inspire you, challenge you and they could see things we hadn't noticed (well it certainly was in my case). Good leaders are like that. They also put their faith in the team they had put together and the managers were able to translate the vision into workable, doable solutions that took the businesses far.
Of course I've also worked for organisations where the leaders and the managers didn't have a clue, sure they were setting examples - unfortunately it wasn't a very good one. And when I said they didn't have a clue, they had no idea why the rate of attrition was so high, or why people were always disengaged and ready to do their own thing.
These people tend to have the "other" set of qualities you've written down.
For example:
Poor time management
Poor communication skills
May take credit for other people's work
Lays blame when things don't go quite right
Those kinds of things.
So go back to your list of leadership qualities you have written down. Which set of qualities are you exhibiting more often than not? What kind of leader would you be?
With many thoughts
