Turn it off

---------------------------
Today's daily dose: Turn it off
---------------------------
In today’s technologically driven world we are at the beck and call of clients, customers, friends and family members 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The Internet, Electronic mail, Meeting planners, Pagers, Personal organizers, Blackberry’s, Chocolate and every electronic gadget that we can lay our hands on to make our working and personal lives easier. The problem is of course, that the more you have the more there is to check. How many email accounts do you have?

Do you keep your electronic mail system open during the day? Most people do, reasoning that if an urgent or important announcement or task comes through you will be able to tackle it straight away. What happens in reality is that this just acts as a way to interrupt your thought processes as the annoying messages pop up on your screen. Similarly, there are all the web 2.0 applications available to us - Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Messenger and people online and quite happy to waste your time as well as their own.

So if you want to get more done, start by turning these things off. Have a set time of day to check your mail and to log onto the chat lines. Start instigating a closed door policy on your Internet and Email use - if people don't "see" you, they can't distract you, which means you can get more done.

With many thoughts

Ok, Elle I'm on a roll tonight - what about customer service. Dontcha think deliberately ignoring emails will be counter productive when it comes to keeping your clients and customers?

I mean if they get shonky service, they're gonna go elsewhere. So I have to disagree big time with this one.
