Today's daily dose: 8th September 2008

Live life to the full - every day.

We had a letter from someone who used to work with us today. She told us her husband had been diagnosed with a fatal disease and has less than 6 months to live. They are hoping some radical treatments will help delay the end, but they both know the end is very, very close and are having to come to terms with that very large and painful fact. This couple are a long way from retirement age, but had hoped to be able to go part-time in the not too distant future so they could fulfil their dreams of travelling the world. That will no longer happen. Life is now taking on a whole new direction for these people, and her letter today is another reminder that age is no barrier to death.

Death may not seem like it should or could be a topic for motivating people. But it should be the biggest one there is. If we don't know how long we have left - surely you would want to use every single, precious minute doing those things you always said you wanted to do. And we wouldn't be wasting time on things that don't matter. The past hurts that still riddle our bodies and our minds. Those busy tasks that add little or nothing to our enjoyment of life.
We would be planning those dream holidays and ways to achieve them. We would be spending time with our friends and families and less time working long hours doing a job that few people appreciate. Unless you are fortunate enough to be working in your chosen industry - and being paid handsomely as a result of course.

We have a lot of school aged people reading these messages, and this one is for you. You have so much ahead of you. Dream big. Don't ever let anyone tell you, you can't do something. Don't ever assume you are not good enough. You are, you have the power within you. Yes you might need a little guidance now and then, but don't be afraid to ask for it, but don't be swayed by "well meaning people" who tell you - "no-one else in our family has ever ..... " just smile and say "then I will be the first and people will look up to me as the one who managed to do it"

Wednesday is the anniversary of my brother's death. He was 19 when he decided his dream was out of reach. Please don't ever let that be you.

I love my brother to bits, but if he were still alive I'd be telling him the same things I am telling you.

Dream big
Live bigger
Things change when you want them to change, and in my brother's case
You don't have to keep on doing the same things in the same way if you don't want to.

And believe me - He and I will have "words" one of these days !!

With many thoughts
Elle

What I am reading:
---------------------------
Believe it or not I am still reading the book "Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything"

Incredibly witty writing even whilst covering subjects that one cannot ever say are funny. But she certainly gave me a few Laugh out Loud moments last night, and for that I am grateful.

You may wonder why I am still reading it a week after starting. Well the reason is quite simple - I haven't had a lot of spare time. For the regular readers of the Daily Dose you will know I am on the count down to my mum (and now sister and niece in law) arriving, so I am scrubbing, sorting and tidying EVERYTHING. But to be honest the house did need it. I've also found a lot of things I have been able to recycle, and yesterday was able to find some curtaining material that will be perfect for a change of décor in my lounge room. Now all I have to do is find time to sew the curtains, buy the rod and get it put up and I will be "sorted".

But I'm interested - what are you reading at the moment? And when do you find the time to do it?

Today's thought to ponder:

"If you really do put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price."
