Forgetting the fundamentals
One thing I don't say very often, but I would like to welcome to all new readers, it's wonderful to have you with us. 20 days ago, we began the 100 day goal-achievement challenge - basically to see what we could achieve in the last one hundred days of 2009. If you would like a copy of the workbook - you can download a copy under the downloads page.
There are also forums where you can interact with your fellow readers should you wish to.
Since the daily dose of motivational medicine was launched several years ago we have covered a myriad of topics - some more often than others - and one of the reasons is due to the fact that the fundamentals of motivation are the same regardless of what you need motivation to achieve.
Sometimes we forget the fundamentals. Sometimes we forget that to achieve great things we need to look at what we are doing and ask - is that serving me - OR - not? And that is the importance of the 100 day goal achievement challenge. A daily reminder of the things we need to do - but also - what do we NOT need to do.
- We do need to talk to ourselves kindly and positively and not berate ourselves over the things we have not yet managed to achieve.
- We need to stop wasting time on things that do not matter.
- We need to take the steps to achieve those things we say are important to us - and we do that one step at a time and sometimes one micro decision at a time. Do we exercise or not. Do we pick up the phone to make those calls we know we need to make or do we hide behind paperwork? Do we hide behind paperwork so we don't have to face up to the fact that we are hopelessly and horrendously in debt? If you are looking at problems then you will never see the solutions. But look at the options open to you - pretend someone else came to you for advice on the topic and then take your own advice....even if it means - get HELP.
- We need to find people who can push us on to the next level so we can achieve more
- We need to find out what motivates those people who work for us (and sometimes it isn't money - but other things - such as a sense of belonging, a sense of achievement, a sense that they are making a difference - or whatever drives them). If you don't know your people you will never know and you will never leverage their skills and abilities. And you find out by observing as well as by asking.
- You need to find out what makes people tick - including yourself. What motivates you will not motivate your neighbor or will not motivate your children. What will? You'd be surprised - and not because the motivators change.
