Into the karma bank
We don't celebrate Thanksgiving here in Australia, but I do like the idea of saying thank you to the people who matter to you....
But one question - if these people matter to you - why wait an entire year?
So - given we don't have a formal "thanksgiving" celebration I prefer to do what I call random acts of kindness for people, as and when opportunities present themselves.
- I'd won two tickets to see a movie - it was one I had wanted to see, but I gave away the tickets to two teenage girls who also wanted to see the movie, but didn't have the means to pay the ticket price.
- Whenever sales people call I am always polite when I say no....and when I ask them how their day has been - it makes their day to not have the phone slammed in their ear again...and the same goes to whoever is on the checkout....
- I created a basket of goodies for a young girl who found out she was expecting a baby - of all the little toiletries and essentials babies need - and cost a fortune to buy if you have to do it in one go...I simply added a single item to my own shopping each week - so by the time the baby was born the basket was filled with things they would need in the first few weeks of the baby's entry to the world.
- I know someone who pays for a person's morning coffee - without them knowing... this person goes to the same coffee shop whenever he is in town, and when he does he has this game going with the sales people....he will pay for 2 and then give them a number - that number represents the person who will receive a free coffee that day after he has left.....
- I've sent "scratchies" anonymously to people I know (instant scratch and win lottery cards).... and
- Mown my neighbors lawn
I know these seem like really small and insignificant things to do, but I can see the difference it can make to another person....and all I ask is that if you can and have the time or the means to do something for someone else - with or without them knowing.
