Stop cleaning the same room: It's time to move on
Imagine being given 3 balls and told to juggle them....properly - and without dropping them. Go on, off you go.
You stop and stare at me and say - but I don't know how - how am I supposed to juggle 3 balls at the same time without being taught, or without dropping them every so often....and no I can't juggle 3 so please don't even think about giving me 4 or even 5 to contend with.
So why do we think we can lose 15 kilos in 5 minutes, or save a million dollars in one year, or pay off the mortgage in 5.
Anything we say we want to achieve takes time....that or a) you've been shown the way by an expert or b) you are a natural. We don't believe in luck here at MotivateMe - we do believe in hard work, persistence and coincidence however.
Some projects take time, energy and a lot of persistence to achieve. That's what makes them worthwhile.
Or think about your projects in this way.
We have our project lined up. We know what the end result is going to be (as in we know what the goal is). And we know that in order to get there we need to do certain things. Yes? Good. Now the first problem is - we have set the goal way to far into the future or way out of our reach - it's hard to be motivated when that is the case. So we conveniently forget about our project. Now imagine if you would, that your project is your home. The place where you currently live.
Imagine what would happen if you didn't wash the dishes or put them away. Imagine what your house would look like with dirty clothes strewn across the floor or left over food congealing in the bowls on the stove. Cleaning up that kind of mess would take a lot of effort, and is very daunting. But if you do a little bit every day - the house doesn't get to that state in the first place and you have time in your schedule to work on those other things you say you want to achieve.
So take a project and break it down so there are several "rooms" and each "room" needs some work. Break down each "room" into what tasks need doing and then take one item and work on it until it is completed. Then once you have done that - you move on to the next room. Where some of us get hung up is we keep "cleaning the same room". We go over and over the same ground - repeating our behaviours, changing the colour scheme and the layout. Then we wander down the hallway - look into the bleak rooms that are left and we race back up the hallway to where we were - it's safe there, it's cosy - after all we've re-arranged everything so that it's nice and we don't need to leave.
Well today I am here to tell you that it is time you took a damn good look at those other "rooms" in your house and to take one and start work on it. And what better time than now.
