Changing your mindset about the task
Overcome the procrastination habit by: Changing your mindset about the task
- If you loved what you did, would you do it? - then pretend you love doing "it" - it's one of those - trick your brain things that sometimes works.
But the one that I find works best is:
- Get involved in the process of completing the task (no matter how menial).
- Get involved - see it for what it is, can you do it differently? Can you do it better? Does the process need changing? Does the job need doing at all.
There are a lot of jobs we do, that really don't need doing at all. We think they do - after all we've always done them like that, but if you look at the workflow process properly, you can usually cut out a few of the steps AND get a better outcome.
So - this week, take a good look at every thing you do. And by that I mean, get out the procedures - or if you haven't got any procedures, your first task is to write some - simply write down the steps you take to complete the task, as in - if someone else were to do your job tomorrow, they would know exactly what to do, what buttons to press, where to find the stationary or whatever the task is. And as you write the steps down, you will soon begin to see how much waste you can trim from the process.
The other good thing about this is - you can go to your senior and say - "hey boss, I've been looking at so and so job, and if we do this instead of this, we can make a saving of .... time, percentage...." in times of down turn, organisations prefer people who can help them. WE know, they're in the business of making money, but if you help them, sooner or later they will be helping you - better jobs, better pay, more training - or whatever. And think - if you are lucky enough to work for yourself, by doing these kinds of things, will mean your personal profit margins will grow.
Doing it properly in this way, may mean you are taking a bit longer to do the work today, but tomorrow, your productivity will soar.
With many thoughts
