Ditch the creams

I saw a billboard on the side of a church on the way to work this morning... it had an image of a life support "blip" then a flat line followed by the words "then what?"

It's an interesting question isn't it. Is there life after life? What would that life be like? Would it be life as we know it or would it be a carousel of flashing images showing people living their lives whilst we stood and observed....actually come to think of it, most people are living that kind of life now, content to watch others live exciting lives whilst they stand by and watch.

But let's imagine for one moment that we get to review what we have achieved. If there is one thing that people agree on it's the "my whole life flashed before my eyes" when they were faced with a major trauma. The question is - what do you think those images would be for you? Would they be amazing, vibrant, oh my goodness did I do all that kind of image, or would the images meld together with no discernible gaps or highlights?

The great thing about tdoay is this.

Tomorrow we have a chance to paint a different picture. A picture of vibrant colour and amazing images.

Imagine that every day you are given a blank canvas on which to work, and you get to draw your day. Now, think about that flat line moment and you have a chance to review your paintings, you walk down a corridor with your daily paintings hanging on the walls? How scary would it be to see the same thing? Row upon row of the same picture, an endless stream of monotony, interspersed occasionally with the odd picture that stands out, a day that was “special” in some way.

You pause for a moment, to reflect, but then as you return to the walk down the corridor the paintings return to the same themes again and again. You stop and try to go back to that picture you saw earlier, but it’s no longer there. You have to keep walking, past picture after picture of mind - numbing drudgery.

Now imagine what it would be like to walk down a corridor where the walls are lined with vibrancy. You would walk quickly towards the next one, to see what new and exciting things you had done. You would smile, you would frown, and you would remember the happy times, the sad times, and the days of pure bliss. Each day the painting was filled with something different.

The question is - if today you had to walk down that corridor what would your paintings look like? Would they be filled with the same kinds of images day after day, or would your pictures be filled with lots of different things and memories?

But you know the best part?! You get to choose what each painting will look like. You get to choose the colour scheme and pallete for your life. Now is it time to ditch the greys and the creams for the more vibrant hues?

What would your paintings look like?

My paintings could be nauseating to another passerby - with all the different colors, images, smells, sounds (paintings can have smells and sounds, right?) - I work hard to fill my life with new experiences, lots of love, and lots of awareness.

Sometimes it's not what we're doing, but how tuned in we are to doing it. We can do repetitive, routine activities throughout the week (work, home, dinner, kids, bed) - but to do it with an awareness of presence. I think that's something that throws splashes of color into every painting.

So even if I am doing something "boring" - it can become exciting by simply being fully present to myself, my emotions, those around me, and all that other gooey stuff.
