Are you a postage stamp?
Postage stamps have one primary function - they stick to their goal. Without their ability to "stick to it" letters and parcels wouldn't get delivered simply because the postal service wouldn't know if they would be paid to deliver whatever it is.
When it comes to your goals - are you like a postage stamp? Do you stick at it so you can reach your destination, or are you lacking a bit of glue in the commitment department?
The bigger the goal is of course, the more glue you are going to need. But all goals can be broken down into as many different sections as needs be.
You've been given a sales call quota for the year. If you look at that entire quota and say - I'm never going to be able to get through those in a year - then you won't try very hard. But divide the number of calls by 52 and you have the number of calls you have to make each week. Now break it down again by 5 (assuming you work 5 days a week) and that is the number of calls per day you need to make. Then you pick up the phone and you start dialing. Every day without fail you stick to your goal and by the end of the first week you've achieved the right number. Next week you decide that instead of just making your numbers though you pick an extra call up each day - now you are getting ahead on the following week's quota - well sooner or later you will want to take some holiday - so you're being sensible. The following week you manage to do the same again. Each call taking you closer to your call quota destination. And the commitment to your goal is noticed.
The beauty of getting things done, is this - you want to carry on. You want that feeling of achievement. The more you achieve, the more you are likely to achieve.
But it is the strength of the glue which is directly proportionate to how badly you want to achieve something.
