How do you tackle the weeds in your garden?

Yesterday was the hump day of the challenge...day 3 of any new program is the time when you decide you can stick to something, or you can't. I hope you got over the hump. I'll let you into a secret about goals, sometimes trying to achieve them is like pulling weeds from your garden.

You can see what needs to be done. But you can't face the thought of starting.

* Do you pick the big weeds first so you can then see the little ones underneath?
* Do you start at the beginning of a weed bed and work slowly until you get to the other end?
* Do you enlist the help of others?
* Do you off load the problem to a third-party?
* Do you spray them with weed killer; Or
* Do you ignore them and hope that either - someone comes along and gives you a hand or they disappear and hey presto - a weed free garden.

The people who achieve more are the ones you put in a little bit of effort over time. If your garden is anything like mine at the moment (coming off quite a wet September) there will be weeds everywhere. But I can't do more than about an hour in the garden because of 3 reasons:

1. The size of my bin
2. An old back injury and
3. Boredom

But I know that over time I can weed the entire garden and achieve my goal. But I also know that other people do this kind of thing better than me - so sometimes I do enlist the help of professionals. I know my limitations and there are some things I won't touch - water, gas, electricity and mowing the lawns. Whilst I can hope someone will wave a magic wand and the weeds will disappear and my goal will be achieved I also know that's not realistic. So I take the slow but sure approach. I can see the big picture, but I know the details are essential.

But most people set goals that are way ahead of where they currently are - and guess what happens then. They blitz in with the weed killer, go hell for leather and spray everything in sight. Then they sit back and wait for the poison to take effect. By the time the poison has done it's job - they've forgotten what the goal was. New weeds start sprouting and before you know it the weeds have taken over the garden again. Not only are they back to square one, they've got even further to travel the second time.

And then you have the last group of people - these people know the weeds are there, but they don't care one way or another. Oh they'll whinge about how bad their lives are, but they never do anything about sorting them out. These are the people who were offered a chance to work with us here at Motivate Me - but couldn't be bothered to download a copy of the challenge.

Well if there is one thing that is certain. I cannot MAKE you do anything. I can only hope to inspire you to do what you know you should - if you want a different life to the one you've got now that is. But only you can change your mindset - about anything, and if you don't think you have the time to do something - you know what - you're absolutely right.

  • So did you get over the 3rd day hump?
  • How did you do it?
  • Now - all you need to do is repeat the successes.

You're right. I sat and made up every excuse to why I was overweight and why I gained 60 lbs, blah blah blah. Then I read your posts and the 100 day challenge came to me just on the right day. I looked in the mirror and said, "I am going to make a change, a change for me." That is excatly what I have been doing for 3 days now. I finally got up and went into weight watchers, something I have wanted to do for a long time but of course had my excuses... "maybe my birth control made me overweight" "I don't eat that bad" "I never exercised before" The truth is, I did play a HUGE part in my weight and here I am going strong on day 3. :-)
