We all know the story of Roger Bannister and his record breaking sub 4 minute mile. Before he broke the record, however, the "experts" said it couldn't be done, they had models to prove that it couldn't be done - but he did it anyway.
How?
Well I feel it comes down to many things, including:
* Determination
* Mental preparation
* Physical preparation
* Training
* Time stamps
and his coaches, friends, family and pace setters
If he hadn't measured his progress through the use of time stamps, would he have known how well he was doing? He might conclude that he was getting fitter, could run faster, but without the measure of "time" he could not determine whether he was on track to beat the 4 minute barrier.
Time then is perhaps one of the most important measures we can use to track our progress. When we talk about goal setting and SMART goals in particular, the final measure is TIME bound. Without a specific time frame to frame our goals they can blow out - and may in fact never get completed. It is important then to ensure you have some way of making yourself accountable. The 100 day challenge is a good example as you know. And as Roger Bannister proved "race day" is another.
How are you holding yourself accountable for your daily activities - or do you rely on other people to push and prod you to reach your deadlines?
And talking of "race day"

Walking the talk

As you know I like to set myself the odd challenge, well this Sunday is the Big Walk to help the Children's Cancer ward at Perth's Princess Margaret's Hospital. As you may remember, I am signed on to do the longest distance - the 15km and way back in September I put out a personal plea to ask if you could sponsor me and help the kids. Well given that it is just a few days away I thought I would send a reminder, if you haven't sponsored me, and would like to see me (given that it is on Halloween) dressed appropriately - think green and black stripy stockings, pointy hats and certainly not track gear ...
Why raise money?
Well there are a couple of very good reasons, the first is - I could have just paid my entry fee, bought the t-shirt and participated in the walk. But then I decided it would just be another walk, so this time I decided I would do my bit and try and raise some money.
The other very big reason is this.
I have 2 happy, healthy kids - but I know that not everyone is as fortunate as I am. I am also using it as a way to prove to you I am walking the talk.
There is a prize for top individual sponsor of a $500 sports voucher, if we get the top spot I am going to donate the money to my children's school so they can purchase some new equipment - which they are always in need of.
Will you help me?
Thanks to the support of some amazing people we have raised over $150 already, but it would be nice to raise a bit more - if you can spare a few dollars, the children's cancer ward and myself would be most grateful. Just click on the link - or copy and paste into your browser - and you can find out all about it.

I regularly walk long distances, tonight I completed 8k's in 70 minutes, sore quads from monday night's training meant I was pushing to go any faster. Given there are going to be thousands of people competing for space on the walk, do I push the time or do I walk for fun? I'll let you know what I decide.
Thanks and regards
Elle
