Today's daily dose: 4th October - Yesterday was a stepping stone to today
---------------------------
Or as Pink Floyd said "all in all it's just another brick in the wall"
How is it that some people look at life as something to be endured rather than enjoyed? While others embrace everything and the change that naturally happens when you leap towards a new day.
It may be as simple as human nature of course, but deep down I think there is more at stake.
You can look at a downturn in the economy as a negative, or you can look at it and ask, why are people no longer buying my product or service? But more importantly what can I do today that means tomorrow when the news will be better, that I am at the forefront of everyone's mind?
Marketing of yourself and your business should always be a high priority of course, but with Information Overload, it is important to get the right message out at the right time. BUT you should also make sure you are not begging people to buy your "stuff".
A case in point, I've signed up for lots of newsletters and ezines over the years, but today I had to take the drastic step and cull most of the recent signings.
Why?
Well I hate being "sold" to, and virtually every ezine from this group of people was - buy this, buy that, and if you do it today you get a ...
Annoying to say the least.
So, how do you get the right mix?
Well I'm not an expert, but something in the region of once in a blue moon is ok to do a direct sell with an ezine, the rest should be "what you said you would give your readers" these didn't, so every one was unsubscribed. Similarly, if you use twitter and / or facebook as a way to meet your clients, again - less of the direct sell and be willing to share information.
Why do you think cold calling doesn't work? Because everyone can smell a desperate please buy from me a mile off. It just amuses me that people think they can use the social networks in the same way as they once did Direct Mail and the telephone. Let me say this once - NO you can't. What you do have to do is be honest, be open, be willing to share information and be willing to pass on the name of other people / companies if they are in a better position to help "your" client than you are. It may sound like a recipe for disaster, but believe me and I'm going to paraphrase Zig Ziglar here "you can get everything you want, if you help as many people as you can get what they want".
So your task is to find out what your clients want, and then find a way to give it to them. And no I don't mean a) bugging them every five minutes or b) bombarding their inboxes with crap either, but by being genuinely interested in their problem. After all that is why you are in business isn't it - to solve someone else's problems.
As always, with many thoughts

100 Day Challenge: The daily posts
-------------------------------------
Discarding 100 items in 100 days : So far so good and my kids are now joining in. My son is especially intrigued with the process and cleaned his room last night and added a clock to the mix... that's not today's item though - today's discard item actually comprises 2 items that just didn't "work". Ladies you will understand this one far better than the blokes out there. And no it's not being sexist, just that for a handbag to "work" it has to be able to do certain things - these 2 failed... http://www.motivateme.info/discarding-100-things/
