SMART Goals: Why the next 100 days are so important

Most goal setting strategies recommend we use the SMART principle for goal setting.

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic and
  • Timebound

When I speak to most of my clients, they always have the same problem  - "time"

They know what they want, they know what they should be doing, it's just that in most cases - they feel they don't have enough "time" to devote to their goal. They have trouble visualising 1 year down the track let alone 5 or 10 years. And we all know what happens then. Because it seems to be too hard you allow yourself to believe you can't make the time today to work on your goals. At the end of a year you are no further forward (in most cases), with the only change being your age and the physical manifestations of "getting older". When we are young, we may feel that it doesn't matter, we have all the time in the world to work on our goals. A few years of thinking those kinds of thoughts and 5 years have gone by.

The reason why the 100 day challenge works so well is because it asks you to work on your goals in 100 day blocks of time - it's important to have long term plans and goals, but don't look a year down the track, or even 5 or 10 years - just work on this next 100 days. As those of you who have already used the challenge will know these 100 days are further broken down. What are you going to do today? What are your plans for the next 7 days?

What difference can you make in 1 day?

You'd be amazed.
