Spring cleaning fever

This is a task I never delegate and I actually like the feeling of doing myself. Every now and then I will clean cupboards and drawers. Today is the kitchen's turn.

I am a great believer in getting rid of clutter -

  • Of the mind
  • Of the food / drinks we consume
  • Of the clothes we never wear
  • Of outdated foods in the cupboards and
  • The general junk that just seems to accumulate in a living household.

It's a Friday night, my son is working and my daughter is sleeping over at a girlfriends place, so for a couple of hours before I need to go pick up my boy I am cleaning the clutter. Tonight it is the turn of the kitchen, a place where we spend a lot of our time and perhaps the most neglected when it comes to dumping things.

Why do I tell you this - well the answer is simple.

If you spend too much time hunting for anything it means you have a good reason to procrastinate. You can't do something because you can't find it.

I bet you have no idea how much junk you actually have in your cupboards - kitchen or otherwise.

If you feel up to it - and please try this at least once as it's great therapy. Take one cupboard and take everything out and put it on the floor. Wipe down the surfaces. But before you put everything back - ask yourself - when was the last time you EVER used that particular item? Do you really need to keep it? No - then get a bag and if it isn't junk - give it to a thrift store. If it's junk - then toss it.

Or if it is your desk or working area - then do the same thing.

If you still have trouble understanding the importance of de-cluttering your living arrangements - think of it this way. If you were moving to a new house tomorrow - do you really want to be carting junk with you?

So a lesson in watch what you are doing.

  • What do you hunt around for?
  • Why?
  • Can you organise yourself a bit better?
  • How?
  • Do you need a company to come in and organise you?
  • How much time have you wasted hunting for things, time that could have been better used?

And by the way - it's great exercise too

With many thoughts

Sometimes I really hate you Elle.... now you're making me feel guilty about sitting down on a Friday night - when I know I'm going to be moving house in the not too distant future .... grrrrr

I just read your email Elle and felt how meaningful it is to clear the clutter though I havent completely done so :) Just before reading this email a couple of days ago I did some overall cleaning of the house as it was indeed a mess and now whenever I come home in the morning (after my night shift) I feel happy no matter how much stressful the night had been....
I realised that neatness of the place I stay makes me feel so good that a stressful night memory no more resides in my mind and I get a real good peaceful sleep....
Thankyou tons and tons............. :)
Your emails means realisation of simple things like cleaning up the clutter and having a peaceful mind to me!
Have a bright shining day!

Hi Chetna

Thank you - most people don't realise it is the simple things that hold us back... and keeping on top of them is the best way to ensure we are not stressed and feel guilty. For example, I have an entire garden that needs sorting out. But with limited time and a sore back I can feel overwhelmed - so I take one small area at a time and I deal with it. Today I removed a couple of dead shrubs and weeded that garden bed, it looks so much nicer, I got some exercise and I can get on with some other stuff. My plan is to clean one area each day - yesterday I started re-organising my writing files on my computer so I can see what projects I need to finish.

With cleaning and clearing comes clarity
Best regards

In the movie 'The First $20 Million is always the Hardest' Rosario Dawson says to the hero that clearing the clutter helps her mind to think, I just remembered that movie with this article.... its a beautiful movie....
