Don't borrow time from tomorrow and other ways to overcome the procrastination habit

We can all be guilty of saying things like "I'll do that tomorrow" it is a classic way to procrastinate over a task you don't really want to do and hope will disappear overnight. You may justify your stance by saying things like, I'm too tired now and will be able to think better in the morning, but in reality we know that isn't the case at all. So if you want to a) overcome that particular procrastination habit b) sleep better tonight and c) have a clean slate for the morning you need to stop borrowing time from tomorrow and deal with that particular blockage.

Other ways to overcome the procrastination habit are:

  • Reclaim some personal time. Otherwise known as work / life balance. We live in a pressure cooker of deadlines, stress and commitments - don't forget "you" are as important as everything else, and besides if you fall over, who's going to do your work? Me? No way I haven't got time - sorry.
  • Not taking on as much - this goes hand in hand with the one above. Don't get pressured into taking on too many things to the detriment of your goals, work load or health. Say no occasionally and you will begin to reclaim some personal time.
  • Work at your peak personal time. You know when you work best, so save the thinking and the must do now items for the time when you have the most energy.
  • Be outrageous. Sometimes we need to jolt not only our brains but those of the people around us. Wear loud ties and odd shoes if you have to, but every now and then it doesn't hurt to laugh at yourself.
  • Expand your sphere of influence - network with people who will challenge you to be better than you currently are.
  • Delegate the dross - ie., things that need doing, just not necessarily by you. Get an ironing service, a lawnmowing man and buy your groceries online - if you really don't like doing something and you procrastinate over doing it, then delegate the task to someone who doesn't mind doing it.
  • Get rid of the weeds - these are those nasty insidious thoughts that penetrate and permeate through your thinking. Get rid of them.
  • Make a decision. Sometimes any decision is better than none at all, at least you are moving
  • Having a good attitude towards life. This one should not need stating, but sometimes - especially when we are stressed, we can be a little grumpy. Start to think about all the good things you have, don't focus on what you don't have.
  • Keep your appointments - especially the ones with yourself. Exercise time, reading and personal development time and so on.
  • Watch the time but not the clock - don't spend valuable time doing things that do not matter, spend the most time doing those things that bring you the most reward.
  • Chart your progress. Unless you know the start point and your projected end point how do you know where you are?
  • Don't rest for too long between projects.
  • Organise tomorrow - today (get a head start on everyone else)
  • At the end of your working week, organise the next.
  • Keep losing to - do lists, then send yourself an email
  • Don't shuffle paper. Keep as much electronically as possible. Just make sure you file it so you can find it.... or use Google - just make sure your metadata / keywords are adequate.
