- Are you in business? Does your business have its own website?
- Do you use the social networking channels eg., facebook, twitter etc to tell people how good you are?
- Do you want to promote your business through these channels?
- Do you want to make lots of "residual income" by using these channels?
If you said yes to at least 2 out of the 4 - there is something I need to tell you.
Promoting your business through the social networks isn't merely an extension of the old sales techniques - give em enough blather and they will come and buy from you, although you would be forgiven for thinking that's why most people have websites. Social networking is about adding value to your "followers" - yes by all means tell them about the article you have just written and give them a link to your site - because that's where it should be located. But a direct sell? Only if you want to annoy the heck out of people - and have them unfollow you at a great rate of knots.
As for my final point - can you make lots of residual income from these channels? Well - yes and no.
Yes - if you provide enough reasons for people to buy from you (these are the benefits - of why, what's in it for me?!) The most common way to describe what a benefit is - is the hole in the wall. Millions of drill bits are sold around the world, people of course don't want a drill bit for the sake of having one - they want a drill bit for the benefit it gives them - the right size hole in their wall.
So - why ARE you in business - what makes your business different / better than anyone else's? Give them enough information and quality information at that - and yes, they might buy from you eventually (this is the conversion rate). In website and social networking terms, to get enough traffic to visit you, guess what? Yes you need a lot of good quality information that people are looking for - and you need to give people a reason to visit on a regular basis. If you cultivate enough credibility through your network you may get enough people to do business with you (and they may even buy from you) although not necessarily - what they might do is refer people to you - because you provide the right kind of information they need.
Something as always to think about in our online, socially interactive world.

* Easy because you’ve made a decision
* Hard because you know how long it’s going to take and you hate feeling hungry all the time.
