Keep an eye on the big picture - BUT ....
Do you know what the end result of your goals are ie., the "big picture"
I'm just asking because a lot of people don't really know what that means. Do you know what you are going to look like when you do reach your goal weight? No, I mean do you have any idea - if you have never been a certain size before and can't imagine what you are going to look like, how your clothes are going to sit on your frame, what your skin is going to look like, what foods you are going to be eating (yes I'm being serious) to maintain your new look - you won't know when you get there. The losing weight /size goal is not just a number on the bathroom scale - it is a whole slew of things that make up the "new you".
And it is the same with any goal - for example:
What are you going to smell like once you have stopped smoking? What will your skin look like? How about your hair and clothes, will your teeth be whiter? Will your food taste better? What will you spend the money on - you know - the money you used to spend on cigarettes - what will you use it for?
What will your new business look like? Where is it going to be located? Are you on a road where there is a lot of foot traffic? Have you got a website built? Have you done your marketing and business plans? What will the floor covering be? What is on the walls? Do you have a pot plant on your desk?
What will life be like when you have finished school? What is your perfect job? What suit will you be wearing for the interview? Does your resume cover all the significant points of your life - did you captain a team? Did you have a part-time job? Do you have a long-term plan for your career? Are you going back to school to finish your degree / get your masters or doctorate? Do you need one or are you delaying the point where you stop being a student and become the entrepreneur you always said you wanted to be?
So - with all that in mind - what are you doing today?
It is important to know what you want your goal(s) to be / look like - when you get there. But it is ESSENTIAL to know that what you are doing today will actually get you to that first point - goals should never be - do once and finish - but a stepping stone to other things - so you have your first business venture - are going to be happy doing the same things every day - what about your plans to travel the world and read 100 books this year - are those items being planned and executed yet?
Don't lose yourself in thinking about the big picture or the end result because it is also important to enjoy the process. If you don't enjoy the journey of getting / reaching your goal you are less likely to succeed or enjoy the goal once you have reached it.
