Goal achievement - our daily activities determine our success and / or failure

Today marks two very important times of any year

  • Solstice (either winter or summer depending where you live) and of course
  • The start of Week 26 - which as you know means we are half way through the year.

A couple of things strike me as I write this:

  • We have covered a huge amount over the first half of the year - there are so many tips, tricks and techniques to overcoming the procrastination habit, it can be hard to know where to begin, so we may procrastinate just a little while longer whilst we decide which applies to us and our circumstances.
  • We may be working hard towards some of our goals, but others may not be getting much of a look-in. So today and for the rest of this week, it's a good idea to spend some time and review what has worked and what hasn't. And perhaps just as importantly - why or why not. Both are very important questions when it comes to goal achievement.

Of course, then we need to break down the next 26 weeks - what do we want to achieve by the end of 2010?

Planning and preparation are two of the main keys to goal achievement, but they are nothing without action.

So a couple of action points to consider:

  • What can you do starting today to push your major goals further in the second half of this year?
  • What do you need to do less of?
  • What do you need to do more of?

The answers to those questions should determine your actions, and it is our daily activities which will determine our success and / or our failure:

  • Do you say you need to practice, but you get to the end of another day without having done any?
  • Do you tell yourself you will go for a walk - and then don't?
  • Do you tell yourself you won't smoke any cigarettes today / drink any alcohol / eat sweets or fast food - but find yourself giving in at the first sight / smell?
  • Do you promise yourself you won't spend any money today on things you don't need, then spot that perfect....

It's easy to pretend we are doing OK, but if you are still at the same point now - half way through the year without any kind of movement, then it is time to be honest with yourself. After all if you can't be honest with YOU who can you be honest with?

And take a good look at your brag book, those things that you HAVE achieved. Why those things? What was it about those items that made you want to work on them and complete them?

Moving forwards it's a great idea to review both how far you have progressed as well as how far you may still have to go, and if and when things don't go quite as planned, knowing that you have done well in the past can get you past any plateaus you may think you've encountered.

Congratulations on all your amazing hard work so far in 2010. Here's to the next amazing 26 weeks, what can't we achieve?
