Doin it for yourself

There is a great line from a song that says "sisters are doin it for themselves" - of course to be politically correct it should be "sisters and brothers" are doin it for themselves, but it doesn't have quite the same ring to it does it.

But the question is - Why is "doin it for ourselves" so important?

I feel it comes down to something quite fundamental, one of those absolute basics - if we are motivated to do something for ourselves and by ourselves - then achieving it is 99.999999% guaranteed.

It is only when we are ready to make the changes will those changes happen.

It is only when we know what we want and we know what we need to do, or we know where we can find the right kind of information - will we move forwards. Procrastination isn't part of our vocabulary and definitely not in our actions - when we are doing something for ourselves.

Whilst we can use the services of mentors and coaches to help keep us on track - it's really down to us when you think about it. We may choose to have a personal trainer a couple of times a week - but how many minutes is that out of an entire week? Just because you work out for a couple of hours doesn't give you the wherewithall to eat your entire body weight in chocolate does it?!

And it's the same for anything else we say we want or want to achieve.

It's interesting, however - if we really don't want something or if someone tells us we need to do something for example:

  • "honey you really need to do something about your weight"
  • "you should give up smoking"
  • "have you thought about going to the gym"

or any other put down comments we hear on an all too regular basis - then nothing is going to happen - in fact the opposite is likely to occur.

So if your motivation is lacking, or you are having trouble working on your goals, make sure you are doin it for yourself and not because someone told you you should.
