MotivateMe!
Providing Strategies to Overcome the Procrastination Habit with a Daily Dose of Motivational Medicine

Today's daily dose: 27th August 2011

I bought a book today, nothing new in that, I would sometimes go without food if I had to make the choice between a book I wanted or food. In fact I had done so many times in my past. What can I say, we were poor. But I wasn't going to let my bank balance get in the way of my education.
Things are a bit better now you'll be pleased to know, but I am still a sucker for a book sale and that's where I was today. As I was standing in the hour long queue (they only have one sale a year) my eye caught the title - 365 thank you's. Now as you know, I am a great believer in saying thank you for the things we receive. I usually do it in person. But the author of this book made the decision after a pretty harrowing previous year (2007) to spend that following year (2008) hand writing thank you notes to people who had made a difference to his life. And it started with the gifts he received at Christmas. Who does that anymore? And then it smacked me on the back of the head - we all should.
In a world of email and facebook it can be so easy to dash off a sentence or two without realising the true thoughtfulness that goes into hand writing a letter or note to someone. As it happens I do hand write letters, not as many as I used to, but some of my family and friends still write to me and respond in kind. It takes a completely different mind set to hand write a letter. There is no delete key, no going back and re-writing a sentence, unless you want to re-write the entire thing - and that's what makes them special. They are a true snapshot of time and how you were thinking at the time.
Now in reading this book I am going to make it a promise to myself - to say thank you for the gifts I receive.
But what do I mean by "gifts"? Well I'm not just talking "stuff" but consider "gifts of time" and simple acts of kindness. These are all gifts if you choose to look at them in that way. Given my birthday is fast approaching, something tells me I shall be handwriting a few notes soon.
How about you? Do you say "thank you" for the gifts you receive? What about taking that a step further and saying thank you to a client. How about hand writing that thank you and posting it to them. I shan't forgo my use of the internet to say thank you to those who connect with me via Motivate Me. Yes, every email I send is hand"written" by me to you. I prefer not to use automated messages, unless I have to, but more of that in another issue, so why should I inflict them on you. You are very special to me, so thank you.
I hope you have an awesome day
With many thoughts

Amazing book I read it in less than a day, but the message was profound.
